Houston, Texas (KTRK) – Rice University and the University of Houston will face a football game for the 44th time on Saturday. This will be the 41st time the winner has received the Bayou Bucket Cup – presented by the Touchdown Club of Houston. However, Bayou’s bucket may be empty in the near future.
These two rivals are scheduled to play in Croistown in 2023, the 45th meeting. But there’s no match scheduled after 2023. UH and Rice will move to the new leagues in 2023, with the Cougars jumping into the Big 12 as the Owls join the American Athletic Conference.
“The scheduling for us and Rice is going to change because of the conferences,” said Dana Holgorsen, senior coach at UH. “I’m totally in favor of it and I think it should happen every year. I’m glad I’m here for the second year in a row and I’m happy that it’s happening next year. After next year, I don’t know what anything looks like.”
“It’s a great thing for the city,” Rice coach Mike Bloomgren admitted. “I’ve heard Dana’s comments, and if it was me Dana who beat us as bad as last year, I would have liked to continue this match as well. But it’s very hard to say. These things are out of our control. It won’t really come down to what we want. It’s going to come down.” To conferences in many situations. So, we’ll see how it goes. I think it’s a great game for the city, and I hope everyone gets out this weekend.”
According to UH Football Communications, Houston and Rice have the shortest distance between the two football divisions (4.6 miles). The two crosstown programs began competing for the Bayou Bucket Cup in 1974 after it was created by the Touchdown Club of Houston.
“The fan base loves it, and the city loves it,” Holgorsen said. “I think the high school coaches support it. It’s good for recruiting.”
“When I first got here, it felt like a bigger deal to the alumni than it was to the team. Now, I think we’re in a place where our kids are really worried about this game. It should always be like this when you have a game,” Bloomgreen said. Affinity because a lot of these guys played together in high school and played against each other in high school.”
UH will host Rice at TDECU Stadium on Saturday at 5 p.m. The Cougars lead the all-time series 32-11.
